I run a packaging factory, and I get the same email most weeks. Someone attaches a beautiful AI render of a coffee bag and asks whether we can make it.
The honest answer used to be no. Not that file, anyway. The picture was lovely and the thing underneath it did not exist — no dimensions, no fold lines, a barcode that was really just a smear of vertical marks, and body copy that dissolved into letter-shaped noise if you zoomed in past 200%.
That gap is what this tool closes. It is a free AI packaging design generator, but the useful part is not the generating — everybody can generate now. The useful part is what your image lands on.
What actually happens to your image
You pick a structure and type real dimensions. Not “medium box” — actual length, width and depth in millimetres or inches. The engine draws the production dieline for that exact size on the spot: every cut line, every crease, glue flaps, the lot. Same engine that writes our factory’s print files, so it is not an approximation of a template, it is the template.
Then your artwork gets mapped onto it panel by panel. Front to front, back to back, gussets where the gussets go. You watch it fold in 3D as you work, which is less of a gimmick than it sounds — it is usually the moment someone notices their logo is sitting exactly where the crease lands.
After that you place the things that have to be perfect: barcode, QR code, nutrition panel, whatever legal copy applies to you. You place those. Not the AI. That distinction is the entire reason this works, and it deserves its own section.
Why AI keeps ruining barcodes
A scanner does not look at a barcode and recognise it the way you would. It measures — the width of each bar and space against a base module width, plus a blank quiet zone on either side, usually about ten modules wide on a UPC. Get those measurements wrong and the laser has nothing to decode.
Image models do not draw bars. They draw something that has the texture of bars. It looks completely convincing in a render and it is worthless at a checkout, and you generally find out at the worst possible moment, which is after the print run.
So we do not let AI anywhere near yours. You upload the real barcode, you position it, and it travels through to the production file untouched — same for QR codes, nutrition panels and legal text. The art is generative. Your identity assets are not. Those two things are kept strictly apart on purpose.
The panel problem nobody mentions
Here is the thing most “turn your AI image into packaging” pitches quietly skip.
An AI render of a box shows you two faces. Maybe three, at a flattering angle. A folding carton dieline has six panels plus flaps and tabs, and every one of them needs artwork. The back panel in your beautiful render does not exist. It was never drawn. There is nothing to extract.
You can either design the missing panels yourself on the canvas, or have Sam — our in-house AI designer — extend the look across them and then adjust what you do not like. Both are fine. What is not fine is a tool implying your single render becomes a complete package, because it cannot, and nobody enjoys discovering that at the proof stage.
How to prompt an AI so the result is actually usable
Since most people arrive here with an image they already made, it is worth saying what separates the ones that drop straight onto a dieline from the ones that fight us. None of this is complicated, and all of it follows from the panel problem above.
Ask for it flat, not at an angle
Almost everyone prompts for a hero shot — the box at a three-quarter angle, dramatic lighting, shallow depth of field. It looks fantastic and it is close to useless as source art, because the artwork is now distorted by perspective and two faces are hidden. Ask for the label artwork flat and face-on. It is a duller image and a far better starting file.
Don’t ask it for text
Every hour spent trying to get a diffusion model to render “ORGANIC DARK ROAST” cleanly is an hour wasted. It does not draw letters, it draws letter-shaped texture, and it will look wrong at print resolution even when it looks fine on screen. Prompt for the artwork and deliberately leave the space where type goes. You will set real type on the canvas afterwards, in a real font, that stays crisp at 300dpi.
Leave your logo out of the prompt
If you ask for “a coffee bag for a brand called Ridgeline,” you will get an invented Ridgeline logo, and it will not be yours. Generate the world around the logo — the pattern, the illustration, the colour field — and drop your actual logo file in afterwards. Same principle as the barcode: art is generative, identity is not.
Think in artwork, not in boxes
The single biggest shift that makes this easy: stop asking AI for a package and start asking it for the surface design that goes on one. The structure is our job and it is already solved. What we cannot do for you is decide what your brand looks like.
What makes a dieline real
Three things, and downloaded templates usually miss at least two.
Bleed. Artwork has to run past every trimmed edge, because no cutting machine on earth is accurate to zero. We push 3mm past the trim on board, 5mm on flexible film and corrugated. Miss it and you get a white sliver along one edge of a few thousand units.
Caliper. Material has thickness, and thickness eats space when it folds. Two boxes with identical internal dimensions genuinely need different dielines on different board — the tuck will not seat, or the lid bows. A generic template cannot know what you are printing on. Ours does, because the material is part of the spec before the die is drawn.
Real geometry. Our cartons follow ECMA construction, corrugated follows FEFCO (0201, 0427 and friends), pouches are native film structures rather than boxes with soft corners. Fold direction, glue flap placement and caliper-aware hinges are computed, not drawn by eye.
What “AI packaging design” actually means
The phrase gets used for two jobs that have almost nothing in common, and most of the confusion in this category comes from that.
The first job is artwork — the illustration, the colour, the pattern, the mood. AI is genuinely excellent at this now, and has been for a couple of years. Any decent image model will give you ten directions in two minutes, and some of them will be better than what a mid-level designer produces in a week.
The second job is structure — the physical object. What size is it. How does the board fold. Where does the glue go. How much material is consumed by the seal. Which panel does the barcode live on, and is that panel going to have a crease running through it. None of that is design in the visual sense; it is geometry constrained by machinery.
Almost every tool sold as an AI packaging designer does the first job and leaves the second one to you, usually without saying so. That is why a design can look finished and still be impossible to order. The artwork was never the hard part.
AI packaging design vs. traditional design
I want to be even-handed here, because the honest comparison is not a wipeout in either direction.
Traditional still wins on: genuinely original brand identity, anything requiring taste under ambiguity, complex structural engineering for an unusual product, and any project where someone needs to sit in a room and argue about it. A good packaging designer is not a prompt.
AI wins decisively on: speed of exploration, cost, and iteration count. A traditional process gives you two or three concepts because each one costs real hours. AI gives you twenty before lunch, which changes what you can afford to reject. For a small brand deciding between four directions, that is the difference between choosing and guessing.
The real shift is not that AI replaced designers. It is that the exploration phase stopped being expensive, so brands that could never afford three rounds of concepts now get thirty. What has not changed is that someone still has to turn the chosen direction into a manufacturable file — and that is the step this tool automates rather than the drawing.
The five files that arrive broken most often
Ranked by how often I see them, and all five are avoidable before you submit anything.
1. No bleed. Artwork stops exactly at the trim line. Looks immaculate on screen, and produces a hairline of bare board along an edge once cutting tolerance is applied across a run.
2. Type inside the crease. Legal copy or an ingredient list positioned where the fold lands. It prints correctly and then becomes unreadable the moment the carton is made, because a crease through small type destroys it.
3. RGB artwork. Screens are additive, print is subtractive. Bright RGB blues and oranges have no CMYK equivalent, so they convert to something duller and the client is disappointed by a file that was always going to do that.
4. Low-resolution logo. Someone pulls their own logo off their website at 72dpi and it is soft at print size. Nothing downstream can rescue it — the pixels were never there.
5. A barcode that was drawn rather than placed. Covered above, and still the most expensive one, because it is the only failure on this list that a proof will not obviously reveal.
Designing on the real dieline eliminates one, two and five outright — the bleed is built in, the crease is visible while you work, and your barcode is a placed asset rather than generated pixels. Three and four are yours to get right, and worth checking before you start.
What this can’t do
Every page like this is a sales pitch, so here is where ours stops.
It will not out-paint Midjourney. If what you want is the most beautiful possible image of a package for a pitch deck, go use Midjourney — genuinely, it is better at that, and I tell people so.
It will not invent your compliance copy, and you would not want it to. It will not rescue a low-resolution logo. And it cannot reconstruct panels that were never in your source image, which is the point above.
It also is not free all the way through. Designing is free and unlimited, and I would rather say the next part plainly than have you find it at the end: exporting the print files is the paid step. No order is ever required, and the files work with any printer you like.
What you can make
Folding cartons, corrugated boxes and mailers, mylar bags and stand-up pouches, rigid setup boxes, labels, koozies, coasters. Foil, spot UV, embossing and Pantone matching if you want them. You can browse every structure at the dieline library before signing up for anything.
If you do decide to have us make it, minimums start at 100 units. That number is deliberate. A lot of pouch converters will not quote below a few thousand, which quietly prices out exactly the brands who need good packaging most — the ones testing a product, or launching a flavour they are not sure about yet, or simply without the cash to sit on four thousand bags.
One practical note on ordering, since it catches people out: check your minimum before you fall in love with a structure. Quad-seal bags and rigid setup boxes carry different economics than a stand-up pouch, and it is much easier to choose a format that fits your budget at the start than to redesign around one later. Every structure you can design on
For most of what you can make here, the die is generated for your dimensions rather than picked off a shelf. Type the size and it is redrawn: fold direction, glue flaps, bleed and caliper allowance all recomputed. Nothing is stretched to fit.
That works out to over 500,000 manufacturable dielines, and it is worth being honest about how that splits. Folding cartons, pouches, labels and mailer bags are drawn to order, on a quarter-inch grid — but only at sizes that survive the press-sheet cap, the slenderness rule, the flatness floor and the ECMA tuck rule. Roughly two thirds of the sizes you could type for a carton get rejected as unmanufacturable, and they are not in that count. Pouches carry the largest share, because a gusseted pouch has a third dimension you choose. Corrugated and rigid boxes work differently: they ship standard stock sizes, because corrugated runs on flute and press economics and rigid boxes are made to fixed tooling. Treating those as free dimensions would have let us advertise a far bigger number, and it would have been a lie.
Competitors advertise “3,000+ templates.” That counts pre-drawn shapes at fixed sizes — roughly 100 times fewer, and each one is the nearest approximation to your size rather than a die built for it.
Grouped the way the factory groups them:
Folding cartons (ECMA geometry)
Straight and reverse tuck end, auto-bottom, seal end, 1-2-3 snap-lock, sleeves, five-panel hanger. The workhorses of retail — cosmetics, supplements, confectionery, anything that sits on a shelf.
Corrugated (FEFCO codes)
0201 regular slotted, 0200, 0203, 0400 series, 0410, 0422, 0427 die-cut mailers. Shippers and e-commerce boxes, where board flute matters as much as the artwork.
Mylar bags and pouches
Stand-up, flat-bottom (box) pouch, side-gusset, quad-seal, flat three-side-seal, spout, pillow. Native film structures, not boxes with rounded corners — gussets, seal allowance, tear notch and zipper track are all accounted for. This is where box-first tools fall apart.
Rigid setup boxes
Two-piece, magnetic closure, drawer-slide, book-style, shoulder-neck. Wrapped board construction for premium goods, where the wrap turn-in and the gap between base and lid are real dimensions, not decoration.
Mailers, labels and the rest
Poly and bubble mailers, die-cut labels in sheet or roll (with core size), koozies and coasters. Foil, spot UV, embossing and Pantone matching available across the board.
What happens after you click order
Worth knowing, because the design decisions you make in the browser have consequences three steps later that nobody explains.
Preflight. Your file gets checked against the die: is the artwork actually covering the bleed, is anything critical sitting inside a crease, are the spot colours defined or did something come through as RGB. Most files that fail here fail for the same three reasons, and designing on the real dieline removes all three before you ever submit.
Proof. You see exactly what will be made and approve it. This is the last cheap moment — a change here costs nothing, the same change after plates costs real money.
Print. Digital for shorter runs, litho or flexo as quantities climb. This is where material choice stops being aesthetic: an uncoated stock will take ink differently to a gloss-coated one, and a colour that looked right on your screen will sit a shade duller on kraft.
Die-cut, fold, glue. The physical die stamps the shape you designed, and cartons then run through a folder-gluer. This is the last stage where a structural problem can still surface, and the first stage where fixing one costs real money.
Pack and ship. Flat-packed for cartons, on rolls or sheets for labels, boxed for pouches. Then it arrives and you find out whether the barcode scans. It does, because you placed it.
What actually drives the price
Not going to publish rates here — every job is quoted on its own spec — but the levers are worth understanding before you design, because two of them are decided by choices you make in the browser.
Quantity dominates everything. Packaging economics are brutally non-linear. Setup — plates, dies, make-ready — is a fixed cost spread across the run, so the per-unit price at 100 and at 5,000 are different worlds. This is the single biggest factor and it is not close.
Material and construction. A rigid setup box is hand-assembled; a folding carton runs through a machine. That labour difference shows up in the quote far more than the board cost does. Similarly, a quad-seal pouch takes more film and more sealing than a flat three-side-seal.
Finishing is where budgets quietly go. Foil stamping, spot UV, embossing and Pantone matching each add a pass. One or two make a package feel considered; four make it expensive without looking four times better. If money is tight, spend it on one finish executed well.
Size, in a way people miss. Price tracks material area, not the box you pictured. A slightly smaller carton that nests better on the press sheet can cost meaningfully less per unit for reasons that have nothing to do with your design — which is why typing real dimensions early, rather than guessing, is worth doing.
Who actually uses this
The pattern in our inbox is consistent, and it is not who you would expect from the marketing in this category.
Coffee roasters and tea brands are the single most common. Small batch, frequent new SKUs, and mylar is unforgiving — a bad gusset ruins the shelf presence of an otherwise good bag.
Supplement and protein brands, because the compliance panel is non-negotiable and AI text is not an option. Cosmetics and skincare, usually folding cartons with foil. Snack and food brands, where nutrition panels have the same constraint. Pet treats, almost always stand-up pouches. Candle and home-fragrance brands, mostly rigid boxes. And designers and agencies who want the dieline without owning the manufacturing relationship.
What they have in common is a real product with a real barcode and a launch date — not a concept deck. That is who the 100-unit minimum exists for.

Is the AI packaging design generator free?
Designing is free and unlimited — no card, no order, no commitment — and you are working on a real production dieline the whole time, not a demo. Free previews carry a watermark. Downloading the print-ready files is the paid step, on a plan. What you never need is an order: on a plan the files are yours to take to any printer in the world.
What is the best AI packaging software?
It depends on what you need at the end, and the honest split is this. For pure artwork, Midjourney and DALL·E still look the best. For fast mockups and a big template library, Pacdora. Most tools marketed as AI packaging generators produce a rendered image, which is genuinely all some people need. If the thing you need is a file a factory can actually run — correct folds, real bleed, a barcode that scans — that is a much shorter list, and it is the reason we built TWOFORM.
Can it turn an image from ChatGPT, Gemini or Midjourney into packaging?
Yes, and that is the specific job it was built for. You bring the image you already made, and it gets laid onto the true production dieline for your structure and size, mapped panel by panel. The catch worth knowing up front: an AI render usually only shows two or three faces of a box, so the panels it never drew have to be designed rather than recovered. Nothing can extract a back panel from an image that does not contain one.
Are the barcodes real and scannable?
Yes, because we never let AI draw them. You place your own barcode on the canvas as a real asset and it is carried through to the print file untouched. This matters more than it sounds: a scanner reads a UPC by measuring precise bar widths and the blank quiet zone on either side. Image models do not draw bars, they draw something that looks like bars — close enough for a render, useless at a till.
Is it suitable for professional printing?
That is the whole point of the output. Every dieline comes from the same structural engine that generates our factory's print files, so you get true cut and crease layers, correct fold direction, glue flaps and bleed — 3mm past every trimmed edge on board, 5mm on flexible film and corrugated. You can hand the file to any printer; you do not have to use ours.
Do I have to manufacture with TWOFORM?
No, and we deliberately built it so you do not. Download the dielines and take them to whichever printer you like. Manufacturing with us is the option that removes the handoff, because the studio and the factory are the same company — but it has never been a requirement, and the files work fine without us.
