The best free dieline templates in 2026
Where to actually get real dielines — and why most of the best free dieline templates on the internet are drawings of somebody else's box.
Hunting for the best free dieline templates usually ends one of two ways: you find a beautiful PDF that your printer quietly rebuilds from scratch, or you find nothing that matches your size and start stretching one that almost does.
I run the factory that receives these files, so I get to see how the story ends. And the honest problem is not that free dielines are low quality. Plenty are drawn beautifully. The problem is that a dieline is not a picture of a box — it is a set of measurements for one specific box, in one specific material.
Change either of those and the drawing stops being correct, even though it still looks correct. That is what makes this whole category so frustrating, so let me explain what actually makes a dieline real, then where to get one.
What makes a dieline real (and a template not)
A dieline is the flat template a factory uses to cut, crease and fold your package: every cut line, every fold line, every glue flap, bleed and safe zone, at exact dimensions.
Three things have to be true for it to be manufacturable, and a downloaded template usually only satisfies the first:
- It matches your dimensions exactly. Not close. A 3mm difference is a box that does not close properly.
- It accounts for your material's thickness. This is the one almost nobody knows about — see below.
- Its fixed features are the right size. Glue flaps, tuck tabs and dust flaps have real-world minimums driven by machinery, not by proportion.
The caliper problem nobody mentions
Two boxes with identical internal dimensions need different dielines if they are printed on different board.
Material has thickness — caliper. When the board folds, that thickness eats into the space, and the dieline compensates with small allowances at every fold and tuck. A dieline drawn for thin folding carton board will produce a box that is too tight on heavier board: the tuck will not seat, or the lid will bow.
A generic downloaded template has no idea what you are printing on. It cannot, because you had not chosen yet when it was drawn. That is not a flaw in the template — it is a limit of the format.
The resizing mistake that breaks almost everything
This is the single most common way a free dieline template goes wrong, and it is completely invisible until the job is on press.
You download a template for a 4×4×6 box, you need 5×5×7, so you scale it up 25%. Everything looks fine. But scaling multiplied your glue flap by 1.25 too, and your tuck tab, and your dust flaps — and those are not proportional features. A glue flap has a functional width driven by the gluing machinery. A tuck tab has a length that has to seat correctly regardless of how big the box is.
Scale a dieline and the box dimensions become right while the mechanics become wrong. It will look perfect on screen and fail on the folder-gluer. If you take one thing from this page: never scale a dieline. Regenerate it at the size you need.
So where do you actually get one?
Your manufacturer — the real answer, and it is free
Ask them. Any competent packaging manufacturer will send you the dieline for the exact structure, size and material you are ordering, usually free and usually within a day. It will be correct because they generated it from the machine that cuts it.
The catch is sequencing: you generally need to know your manufacturer and your specs first, which is awkward when you are still exploring. But if you already know who is printing your job, stop reading and email them.
Free template libraries — fine for learning, risky for production
There are genuinely useful free dieline libraries out there, and they are a good way to understand how a structure works before you commit to anything. Download one, print it on paper, fold it by hand — you will learn more in ten minutes than from any article.
Just treat them as reference rather than production files. The dimensions are somebody else's, the caliper allowances are for a material you may not be using, and the resizing trap above is waiting.
Pacdora — big library, good previews
A large template collection with strong 3D previews, and genuinely good for exploring structures quickly. Export is generally the paid step.
Same underlying caveat as any template library: you are picking from pre-drawn structures rather than generating one for your exact material spec.
Professional CAD (ESKO ArtiosCAD and similar) — what factories actually run
This is the real tooling. Structural designers use it to build dielines parametrically, with full material libraries and machine constraints built in.
It is also priced for factories, not for brands, and it takes real training. Worth knowing it exists — it explains why manufacturer-supplied dielines are correct in a way downloads are not.

- Need a file for a real print run? Get one generated at your exact size and material. Do not resize anything.
- Whatever you use, confirm it opens with real vector cut and crease layers, not a flattened image of lines.
