How to put a barcode on your packaging so it actually scans
It is the smallest element on the package and the only one that can make the entire run worthless. Here are the numbers that decide it, and the places it must never sit.

A barcode is the one thing on your packaging that has to work for a machine rather than a person. Everything else on the panel can be a judgement call — this colour or that one, this much copy or less. The barcode either reads or it does not, and you find out which at the worst possible moment: after the run is printed, paid for, boxed and sitting in a retailer’s receiving bay.
It is also the element people put the least thought into, because it looks like a solved problem. It is not hard. It is just exact, and almost nothing else on a package is.
The five ways a barcode dies
Every one of these looks completely fine on screen. That is what makes them expensive — none of them is caught by looking at the design, and all of them survive right through to the finished package.
Start with a number that is actually yours
A barcode is not a graphic. It is a number, drawn. The bars are just a machine-readable rendering of digits that are supposed to identify your company and your product — a GTIN. So before any of the design questions matter, the number has to be real and it has to be yours.
Real numbers come from GS1, the organisation that issues them worldwide. You license a company prefix and build your product numbers from it. That licensing is the entire point: it is what makes the number resolve to your business when a retailer looks it up.
The cheap-barcode trap. Third parties resell single barcodes for a few dollars. Those numbers were issued to a different company years ago, and the major retailers check who owns a prefix before they list a product. The saving is real and so is the rejection. If you are selling direct to consumers only, you may not need a barcode at all yet — but when you do need one, license it properly.
The measurements that decide whether it scans
These come from the GS1 General Specifications for a standard retail symbol. They are not house style and there is no rounding them for a tidier layout — a barcode is a piece of engineering that happens to be printed on your artwork.
If you remember one line from this whole piece, make it the quiet zone. It is empty space, which means it reads as wasted space to anyone laying out a crowded back panel, and it is deleted more often than every other mistake here combined. Nothing goes inside it — not a border, not a hairline rule, not the edge of a photograph, not an ingredients line, and not a fold.
Supply the symbol as vector artwork — EPS, PDF or SVG — rather than a PNG or a JPG. Bars have to stay crisp at the exact width they were calculated at, and a raster barcode softens the moment it is scaled or resampled on the way to plate.
Colour: dark bars, light background, no exceptions worth taking
A retail scanner reads with red light. It does not see colour the way you do — it sees how much of its own red light comes back. Bars have to absorb that light and the background has to reflect it.
- Bars: black is the safe answer. Dark blue, dark green and dark brown also work.
- Never red, orange, yellow or any light colour for the bars. Under red light a red bar is effectively invisible — the symbol reads as a blank white space.
- Background: white is best. Red, orange and yellow backgrounds are usually fine, because they reflect red light happily.
- Never reverse it. Light bars knocked out of a dark panel invert the contrast the scanner expects.
- Never straight onto foil or metallic film. A reflective substrate bounces the scanner’s light back at it. Knock out a solid white block behind the code and print the bars on that.
This is the rule designers fight hardest, because a black rectangle on a beautifully art-directed panel feels like a compromise. It is not a compromise, it is a scanner. The good news is that the white patch it needs can be shaped, positioned and integrated into the layout — it just cannot be recoloured.
Where it can and cannot sit on the package
This is where a dieline earns its keep. On a flat design file, a fold line is a thin dashed line that is easy to ignore. On the finished package it is a hard crease running straight through your artwork, and a barcode does not survive one.
The practical check takes about ten seconds and catches nearly everything: look at the barcode on the flat blank and confirm no knife line and no crease line passes through it or through its quiet zones — then fold the package in 3D and confirm the code ends up on a panel a person can actually point a scanner at.
Why no AI should ever draw your barcode
An image model will produce a barcode on request, and it will look right. Evenly spaced dark lines, a sensible white margin, a row of digits underneath, the whole thing sitting neatly on the back panel. It is worth understanding exactly why that image is worthless.
The bar pattern in a generated image does not encode the digits printed below it. The model has learned what barcodes look like, not what they mean — there is no number being converted into bars, because there is no number. Even where a scanner manages to read something, it reads a different value than the one written underneath, and that value belongs to nobody.
This is the same reason nutrition figures, ingredient lists and legal copy are never generated either. They are all facts about your product that only you have, and an invented fact that looks plausible is far more dangerous than an obvious blank.

Can AI generate a barcode for my packaging?
It should never try, and on TWOFORM it does not. An image model draws something that looks like a barcode — evenly spaced dark lines with digits underneath — but the bar pattern does not encode the number printed below it, and the number itself belongs to nobody. It will look completely convincing in the design and in the 3D preview, and it will fail the first time somebody scans it. Your barcode is a file you own and upload, and you place it on the canvas yourself.
Where do I get a real barcode number?

How small can a barcode be on packaging?
For a standard UPC-A or EAN-13 at retail, 80% of nominal — roughly 1.175 in by 0.816 in including the quiet zones. That is the floor defined by the GS1 General Specifications, not a comfortable working size. Anything smaller is finer than a worn retail scanner can resolve reliably, and reliability is the whole point. If the panel has room, print it at 100% or larger.
What is a quiet zone and why does it matter so much?
It is the empty light space on each side of the bars — nine narrow-bar widths, about 0.117 in at full size. The scanner uses it to work out where the symbol begins and ends. It looks like wasted space on a crowded panel, so it is the first thing a designer trims, and trimming it is one of the most common reasons a printed barcode will not scan. Nothing goes in it: no artwork, no border, no ingredient text, no fold.
What colours can a barcode be?

Where should the barcode go on a box or pouch?
On a flat back or bottom panel, clear of every crease, glue flap and gusset, with its quiet zones intact. It must never cross a fold line — folding bends the bars out of parallel and changes the geometry the scanner is trying to read. On a pouch, keep it off the gusset and off any area the seal runs through. On a tube or a small jar, run it parallel to the curve rather than around it.
Does TWOFORM check my barcode?
