What are the different types of rigid boxes?
The main types of rigid boxes are the two-piece lid and base, the magnetic closure box, the drawer or slide box, the book-style hinged box and the shoulder neck box, and what separates them is how the box opens and how the opening is framed.
The five types, side by side
| Type | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Two-piece lid and base | A separate lid and base in thick wrapped board. The classic gift box. | Luxury products and a premium unboxing. |
| Magnetic closure | A rigid box with a hinged lid held shut by hidden magnets. | High-end electronics, jewelry and subscription boxes. |
| Drawer or slide | An inner tray that slides out of an outer shell, like a matchbox. | Jewelry, chocolates and a reveal moment. |
| Book-style (hinged lid) | Opens like a book, with a rigid hinged cover. | Presentation sets and premium kits. |
| Shoulder neck | A lid and base separated by an inner neck that frames the opening. | Ultra-premium spirits, fragrance and watches. |
What makes a box rigid
A rigid box is built from thick board that is wrapped by hand, with the printed paper or finish wrapped around it. A folding carton is the opposite: printed flat, cut and creased, then folded and glued by machine. That hand work is why rigid boxes feel so different and why they start at a higher size floor.
How to choose
- You want the classic gift box feel: two-piece lid and base.
- The box is part of the product experience, and you want a satisfying close: magnetic closure.
- You want a reveal, something that slides open: drawer or slide.
- You are presenting a set, a kit or documents: book-style.
- The product is small, precious and deserves a frame around it: shoulder neck.
Size limits
TWOFORM designs rigid boxes from 50 × 40 × 15 mm up to 500 × 500 × 300 mm (about 2.0 × 1.6 × 0.6 in up to 19.7 × 19.7 × 11.8 in). The floor is higher than a folding carton's because rigid boxes are wrapped by hand, and nobody can wrap a tiny one properly.
