Settle this before you design

Weight in a shallow box goes straight into the corners

A thousand pieces of chipboard is a dense, sliding mass in a box only a couple of inches deep, and every knock drives it into a corner. Corner strength is the specification that matters, which is why rigid and telescoping constructions dominate. A shallow folding carton at that weight collapses along an edge.

The mistake that costs a print run

Assuming the lid image will match the puzzle

The lid is the reference the customer solves against, so the printed colours on the box and on the puzzle pieces have to correspond. They are printed on different substrates by different processes and they will not match by default. Specify the relationship deliberately rather than discovering the difference on the shelf.

How you actually make it

  1. Open the structure above and type your real dimensions. The dieline is generated at that exact size and validated against real manufacturing limits as it draws — if a size cannot be folded, glued and shipped, it says so before you design anything on it.
  2. Describe your brand and the AI designs the artwork directly onto that dieline — not onto a picture of a package.
  3. Place your own logo, barcode and any required panel yourself. The AI leaves them exactly as placed unless you ask it to change them.
  4. Fold it in live 3D to check it, then download print-ready files to use with any printer — or have TWOFORM manufacture it.

Questions about custom puzzle boxes

What size box does a 1000-piece puzzle need?

Around 12 × 9 × 2in is the familiar footprint. The depth is driven by the piece board thickness and how completely the pieces settle, so check with a real cut set.

Why do puzzle boxes use a separate lid?

A lid-and-base construction carries a stacked load through its walls. A shallow box with folded flaps has nothing holding the corner, which is exactly where the weight ends up.

Should the lid image match the pieces exactly?

As closely as you can specify it, because the customer is matching pieces to it. Board and paper print differently, so the relationship has to be set deliberately.
