Settle this before you design
The folded board sets the footprint and nothing else moves it
A quad-fold board has a fixed folded size and it has to lie flat in the base with clearance. That single dimension sets the box footprint, and the depth then follows from the insert, the punchboard and the card stacks. Design the board's fold pattern and the box footprint together, because changing one after the other is a full redesign.
The mistake that costs a print run
A box that has to be repacked exactly to close
Players unpack a game every time they play and repack it in a hurry. An insert that only closes with everything in one precise arrangement leads to a bulging lid, and a bulging lid is what damages a stacked shelf. Leave a few millimetres of headroom above the fullest arrangement.
How you actually make it
- Open the structure above and type your real dimensions. The dieline is generated at that exact size and validated against real manufacturing limits as it draws — if a size cannot be folded, glued and shipped, it says so before you design anything on it.
- Describe your brand and the AI designs the artwork directly onto that dieline — not onto a picture of a package.
- Place your own logo, barcode and any required panel yourself. The AI leaves them exactly as placed unless you ask it to change them.
- Fold it in live 3D to check it, then download print-ready files to use with any printer — or have TWOFORM manufacture it.

What size box does a board game need?
The folded board sets the footprint — a standard quad-fold board leads to roughly a 12 × 12in box — and the components set the depth. Design the board fold and the box together.
Why do game boxes use a lid and base?
It stays square under stacking and reopens cleanly hundreds of times. A one-piece box with folded flaps loses its shape within a few plays.
Does a board game box need an insert?
For anything with cards, tokens and a punchboard, yes. Without one the components migrate under the board and the box is a mess after the first game.
