Settle this before you design
A cylinder in a rectangular cavity will roll unless it is held
A pen dropped into a plain box slides end to end and rotates, which scuffs a lacquered barrel and mars a plated clip. A foam bed, a paper cradle or a ribbon loop stops both. Design that holder around the actual barrel diameter and clip height before you size the box.
The mistake that costs a print run
Building a folded carton at the narrow limit
A pen is around half an inch across, and folded board stops at about three quarters of an inch per axis. A carton at that floor folds badly and creases inconsistently across a run. If the pack has to be tight to the pen, a rigid drawer is the format that goes there and a folding carton is not.
How you actually make it
- Open the structure above and type your real dimensions. The dieline is generated at that exact size and validated against real manufacturing limits as it draws — if a size cannot be folded, glued and shipped, it says so before you design anything on it.
- Describe your brand and the AI designs the artwork directly onto that dieline — not onto a picture of a package.
- Place your own logo, barcode and any required panel yourself. The AI leaves them exactly as placed unless you ask it to change them.
- Fold it in live 3D to check it, then download print-ready files to use with any printer — or have TWOFORM manufacture it.
Questions about custom pen boxes
What size box fits a single pen?
Around 1.25 × 1.25 × 4in as a rigid drawer for a standard pen with a cradle. Folded cartons cannot comfortably go much narrower than three quarters of an inch per side.
Does a pen box need an insert?
Yes if the finish matters. A pen rolling loose in a box scuffs its own barrel and clip, and a plated or lacquered finish shows it immediately.
Rigid or folding carton for a pen?
Rigid for anything premium or narrow — it goes tighter than board folds and it feels like the product it holds. Folding for volume and promotional runs opened once.
